What is Matter?

Matter is a read-later app for iPhone, iPad, and the web, built by a small independent team and honored three times as Apple's App of the Day. It saves articles, PDFs, threads, newsletters, YouTube videos, and podcast episodes into a single queue, strips them into a clean reader view, and can read them aloud with unusually natural speech synthesis. Newsletters can be routed in via Gmail or a dedicated Matter email address, and you can follow writers and RSS feeds directly. Highlights are captured with a long press and drag and can sync out to "second brain" note apps. A browser extension handles saving from the desktop; a one-tap importer brings in an existing Pocket library. There is no Android app.

Key features

Where it saves to

Matter library (its own reading queue app) · Obsidian, Notion, and other note apps via highlight sync

Pricing

The core read-later service is free indefinitely: an unlimited library, saving via the mobile apps and web extension, the clean reader, and unlimited tags cost nothing. Matter Premium, at $8/month or $60/year, unlocks HD text-to-speech, highlighting and note-taking, integrations, full-text search, and priority support. The free tier is enough for basic save-and-read use; listening and note-taking workflows effectively require the subscription.

Best for

iPhone and iPad readers who want a polished, design-forward reading queue and like listening to articles as much as reading them. Especially good for people consolidating articles, newsletters, and podcasts into one place.

Pros

  • Notably polished iOS reading experience, recognized three times as Apple's App of the Day
  • Best-in-class text-to-speech with time-synced transcripts and audio highlights
  • Handles more than articles: newsletters, PDFs, YouTube videos, and podcasts in one queue
  • One-tap Pocket import and CSV data export keep your library portable

Cons

  • No Android app — the team is explicitly focused on iPhone, iPad, and web only
  • Headline features (text-to-speech, annotations, integrations, full-text search) sit behind the Premium subscription
  • Run by a small team, so long-term maintenance depends on subscription revenue

FAQ

Is Matter free?

Yes, the core read-later service — saving articles and reading them in the clean reader — is free indefinitely. Premium ($8/mo or $60/yr) adds HD text-to-speech, highlighting and note-taking tools, integrations, and full-text search.

Can I import my Pocket data into Matter?

Yes. In the app, tap the '+' button on your Queue and choose 'Import Pocket'; Matter handles the migration of your saved articles automatically.

Does Matter have an Android app?

No. Matter is available for iPhone, iPad, and the web only; the team says it is focused on those platforms, so Android users should look elsewhere.

Can Matter read articles aloud?

Yes, and it's the app's signature feature: advanced speech synthesis reads saved articles in human-like audio, and you can capture highlights while listening without looking at the screen. Text-to-speech is part of the Premium tier.
