Best Self-Hosted Save Tools You Run Yourself (2026)

These tools save into a database on hardware you control. Wallabag and Shiori keep clean offline copies of articles, Linkwarden captures every link as a screenshot, PDF and HTML file, linkding stays deliberately minimal in a single Docker container, LinkAce adds tags, lists and link-rot monitoring, Karakeep layers on LLM auto-tagging that can run against a local model, and ArchiveBox snapshots each URL in half a dozen formats including WARC. All are open source and Docker-ready; the only running cost is the machine.

FAQ

Why self-host a save tool?

Because hosted services end. Pocket shut down in July 2025 and deleted user data that October, closing the export window with it. A tool running on your own server cannot be discontinued, repriced, or acquired out from under your archive.

How hard is it to run one?

Easier than it sounds. Every tool here ships an official Docker image; Shiori is a single Go binary, linkding is one container with SQLite, and ArchiveBox needs one docker-compose file. Basic terminal comfort and a spare machine or cheap VPS is enough.
