Save tools that shut down
Save tools die, and when they do they take your archive with them. Pocket's 2025 shutdown deleted a decade of saved articles for millions of people; Omnivore went dark a year earlier when its team was hired away. This page records the save tools that no longer exist, what happened to the data, and which surviving tool is the closest replacement for each. The lesson runs through all of them: pick tools with open exports, and keep a copy you control.
Shut down July 2025
The default read-later app for most of a decade. Mozilla stopped Pocket in July 2025 and deleted user data that October, closing the export window with it. If you saved an export file before the deadline, Instapaper, Readwise Reader, and Wallabag all import it. If you did not, the archive is gone — which is the whole argument for picking a tool with open exports next time.

Omnivore
Shut down November 2024
Open-source, fast, and genuinely loved by its users — until the team joined ElevenLabs in late 2024 and the hosted service closed in November. The code remains public, so self-hosting is technically possible, but nobody is shipping it. Most Omnivore refugees landed on Readwise Reader for the reading experience or Karakeep and Wallabag for the self-hosted, open-source ethos.

How to not lose your saves again
- Prefer tools with a one-click export in an open format — HTML, JSON, Markdown, or OPML.
- Export on a schedule, not when a shutdown is announced. Pocket gave three months; the data was gone after that.
- Open source is insurance: even abandoned, the code and your self-hosted copy survive. See the open-source collection.
