What is Keep It?

Keep It is a notebook and document organizer for Mac with separate apps for iPhone and iPad, made by Steve Harris at Reinvented Software. Its defining decision is storage: everything you save is a real file in a real folder in the Finder, tagged and searchable through Spotlight and backed up by Time Machine, rather than an opaque database only the app can open. Web content arrives through a Safari extension that files a link in one click, or the standard share extension, and can be saved as a PDF or web archive for offline reading - including a stripped-down format that keeps only the article. Around that it does the work of a notes app: rich text, plain text and Markdown editing, PDF annotation, document scanning, and email archiving, with folders, tags and bundles for organisation. iCloud keeps the library identical across every Mac and iOS device.

Key features

Where it saves to

Real files, folders and tags in the Finder, synced via iCloud · Web links saved as PDF or web archive

Pricing

Keep It is a free download on the Mac App Store with in-app purchases: monthly and yearly subscriptions, both starting with a free trial. Reinvented Software also sells one-time licences directly from its own store. Neither the App Store listing nor the vendor's site publishes the figures - the direct store reveals them only after a checkout step - so treat the free download as a trial and check the current price in the App Store before committing.

Best for

Mac users who want a capable organizer without handing their archive to a proprietary database - the Finder-native storage means the library is still usable if Keep It ever goes away. Worth checking the price before you invest time.

Pros

  • Saved content stays as ordinary files in the Finder, readable without the app
  • Spotlight search and Time Machine backups work with no extra setup
  • Saves web pages as PDF or web archive, including a stripped article format
  • One-time licences still exist alongside the subscription

Cons

  • Pricing is not published - you find out at checkout or in the App Store
  • The free download is a trial, not a usable free tier
  • Apple platforms only, and the iPhone/iPad app is bought separately from the Mac one

FAQ

How much does Keep It cost?

The vendor does not publish it. The Mac App Store lists the app as a free download with in-app monthly and yearly subscriptions, and Reinvented Software sells one-time licences from its own store, but the figures appear only at checkout or inside the App Store.

Where does Keep It store what I save?

As ordinary files, folders and tags in the Finder, synced through iCloud. Spotlight indexes them and Time Machine backs them up, and if you stop using Keep It the files are still sitting there in a format anything can open.

Can Keep It save a web page for offline reading?

Yes. Its Safari extension saves a link in one click, and pages can be stored as a PDF or a web archive - including a minimal format that strips the page down to the article itself.

Is there a free version of Keep It?

Not really. The download costs nothing and subscriptions begin with a free trial, but sustained use needs a subscription or a one-time licence, which is why it is not in this directory's free-tools collection.
